The main focus of this video is the work I did in the clouds to make them stand out and look a bit more menacing!

Learn how to balance light in Photoshop when you have a dark foreground against a bright background.

This tutorial utilises luminosity masking to balance the light and create a correct exposure when the foreground was severely under-exposed.

The image used in this demonstration was sent in by James Ruse (thanks James!). It was a beautiful image to work with, with the beautiful sunrise colours of the sky being reflected in the still lake in the foreground.

There were a couple of challenges however, and a few main levers to pull in order to get the best out of the photo in Photoshop. These are the areas I concentrated on in this demo, staying true to the 80/20 rule.

The image was sent in to me by John Wright, who captured three bracketed exposures of Uluru and wanted to know how to make the sky pop without blowing out the foreground and subject.

The critical piece of the puzzle was creating selections that could be used to isolate adjustment layers to specific areas of the photo by brushing through the selections and into the adjustment layers’ masks.
